Penny Lee Schell, 73, died peacefully on June 17, at Rosetta Assisted Living, with her family by her side. She entered this world on Oct. 2, 1944, in Wendell, Idaho, born to Marjorie and Ed Stevens.
Penny graduated from Minidoka County High School in 1962 and attended St. Mary’s College in Lawrence, Kansas, working at Minidoka Memorial Hospital during summer breaks. She met her future husband, Phil Schell, at a New Year’s Eve party in 1963; they were married 14 months later on February 27, 1965, in Rupert. In their adventurous early years, they lived in Ogden, Long Island, Philadelphia, and Seattle, before moving back to Idaho to raise their daughter Heather near family. Penny attended school at CSI and became an LPN in 1980, working in surgery and long-term care; she retired in 1995, after helping put her daughter through graduate school.
Penny was a joyous, creative, generous, and compassionate soul. She had an open heart for anyone who was poor, downtrodden, lonely, frail, very small or very old, with two legs or four, outcast, cantankerous, or simply marching to a different drummer. She was certified as a master gardener and used her green thumb to turn the family yard into a slice of Eden. She was treasured by family and friends for her warmth, her outrageous sense of humor, her strong sense of honor, and her playfulness.
She is survived by her husband, Phil; her daughter, Heather; her sisters, Marie Lee and Martha Stevens; her brother, Ted Stevens; many charming nieces and nephews, and a very disconsolate dog.
Contributions to Penny’s memory may be made to the Twin Falls Animal Shelter, 420 Victory Ave, Twin Falls, ID 83301
The family would like to thank Dr. May and the nurses at St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center, Kayla and the staff at Rosetta Assisted Living, and Jean and the team at Hospice Visions, for making Penny’s departure as comfortable as possible.
Services will be held at a later date. Cremation is under the direction of Serenity Funeral Chapel Life Celebration Center and Cremation Services of Idaho, Twin Falls. Condolences may be shared at www.serenityfuneralchapel.com.
