Joan Ettesvold, our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother was called home by her beloved lord and savior Jesus Christ on July 14, 2018.
We want to tell you about our hero.
Joan Degree Ettesvold was born in Renville, Minnesota on May 18, 1934 To Robert and Mildred Degree. She was educated at St. Cloud Teachers College (now St. Cloud State University). She married Kermit Ettesvold in 1956 and moved to Port Hueneme, California in 1960.
So why "our hero?" it's because our mother's life fits the classical definition of a hero, to wit, "a legendary figure endowed with great strength or ability." Our father passed away in 1967, leaving Joan with five children under the age of ten...and no job to support them. Our hero was equal to the task. Pressing forward with raising five high-spirited, challenging kids, we grew up in an environment where education was emphasized, kindness was mandatory, and laughter was both the glue and lubricant of our complex machine. The result? An award-winning chef. A professor. A national champion and All-American college volleyball player. Eight college degrees. We list these not because they are our accomplishments...but because we are hers. After her nest was finally emptied, Joan moved to Twin Falls, Idaho in 1994 to be near her son Eric.
Her legacy of love and laughter will live on in perpetuity through us, our children and grandchildren, and beyond. We were fortunate to have her guiding our lives, and the world is just a little bit better for her having traversed her life's journey.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband Kermit. She is survived by siblings Mary Louise Mitchell, Robert DeGree, and Yvonne Taylor, her children Kae Connors, Julie Wong, Mark Ettesvold, Eric Ettesvold, and Lisa Edwards. who have given her (to date) ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She will be both forever missed and fondly remembered.
And she had the most beautiful eyes.
Private burial services will be held. Serenity Funeral Chapel Life Celebration Center and Cremation Services of Idaho, Twin Falls. Condolences may be shared at www.serenityfuneralchapel.com.
